One of many stairways to the sky. It is hard to imagine this vast infrastructure of terraced gardens and paths being used by the many thousands of people who depended on Nisyros for food. Today they are left overgrown and falling down. They are a reminder that things change and that economies change. What is valuable today might not be in the future. Each parcel and field at one time was valuable and belonged to someone who depended on it to produce the food they would eat. Today we can see and use the paths and fields and the terraces left are a long enduring reminder of what once was a bustling economy.
